I have been a physician (M.D.) for 37 years so I speak from experience. If you are really 39 years old, I would pick another health-related career, such as a Medical Assistant. (MA). It takes 4 years of costly medical school and 3 more years of internship and residency. Unless you are wealthy or have a wealthy relative, you will have a huge debt from loans you needed to pay the costs of your education. You would be 56 when you finished. Medical schools may not admit you because you have so few productive years left after your training. You will work in a medical group or as an employee of large medical corporation and be hounded into seeing more patients and making more money for the corporation. I worked at a clinic that did not accept any form of health insurance. The cost of a visit was $59, but the doctor was expected to order lab tests. Lab tests added to the bill and were very profitable. For each month, a metric sheet came out with the doctors names coded. It listed the average revenue per patient for each doctor in numerical order. The doctors at the bottom worked fewer days and eventually were discharged. At that clinic there was no professional cleaning service. The medical assistant and the doctor did all the cleaning. I cleaned and unclogged the toilets because The MA?s found it too distasteful.
