Stuck in a sexual rut? The right therapist can turn so-so sex stellar!

What is sex therapy, anyway?  Could it help you?  A sexual therapist is a licensed professional who can work with individuals or couples who are experiencing sexual problems.  The most common reasons why men visit a sex therapist are premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.  Women often visit a sex therapist because of anorgasmia, or the inability to orgasm. Once in therapy, a patient is offered the opportunity to discuss sexual issues in a trusting environment.  Sex therapy can also include sex education to help a patient learn about the body and how it functions sexually.  Another component of sexual therapy is sex exercises, which are designed to be completed outside of a therapist’s office. A common exercise is called sensate focus.  Used to treat issues like erectile dysfunction, sensate allows a couple to see sex as an experience that is not just about orgasm.  In sensate, a couple moves gradually through phases of foreplay, starting with erotic talking, and working up slowly to full intercourse.  If therapy proves ineffective, some sex therapists will offer referrals to sex surrogates, certified people who engage in sexual activity with clients.  Sexual therapy can be a huge help for couples experiencing problems. If you think you are a candidate, speak with your physician about a referral.
