Breast Enhancement BasicsVideo Description:More than 250,000 breast enhancement surgeries were performed in America last year. So what's the big deal with breast augmentation? Transcript:If you are wondering if breast augmentation surgery is right for you, this video is a great place to start. Wendy Lewis, an international beauty consultant and expert, and author of America's Cosmetic Doctors, is here to help you navigate the options.  Enhancing your breasts is a very personal decision. Breast augmentation is performed to enhance volume, even out asymmetrical breasts, reshape breasts after nursing, and to reconstruct breast tissue post mastectomy. With today’s advancements, surgeons are able to produce beautiful, natural-looking breasts that suit your body shape and frame.  While images such as this one are often synonymous in the public consciousness with breast enhancement, it is worth noting that over 250,000 breast enhancement surgeries were performed in America last year.  More than ever, women are embracing the opportunity to have the silhouette they’ve always wanted.  During breast augmentation surgery, your surgeon will place an implant behind your breast tissue or above your breast muscle. The implant will be filled with either saline or silicone gel. Every woman is different, which is why your surgeon will select the implant size, shape, style and dimensions that are best for you.  The FDA banned silicone implants in 1992, citing concerns about leakage and links to other health problems. Recently, plastic surgeons refuted these concerns, and in November 2006, the ban was lifted. Today, women have a choice of implants filled with either silicone gel or sterile saltwater. Silicone offers several advantages the biggest of which is that they create a more natural look and feel.  In most cases, surgery can be performed in an accredited ambulatory surgicenter, under local or general anesthesia. The procedure takes from one to three hours to complete. The incisions can be made underneath the breast, on the lower edge of the nipple, or under the armpit. Your surgeon will use this incision to create a pocket for the implant. Most women are able to return to work or normal activities in as little as one week.  While most surgeries are very successful, potential complications from breast augmentation include the formation of scar tissue around the implant which creates hardening in the breast. Other rare complications include asymmetries, loss of nipple sensitivity and implant rupture. The newest silicone gel filled implants reduce the risk of rupture. Breast implants can be removed or exchanged at any time if necessary.   For best results, breast augmentation surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. You should consult with at least two or more surgeons to review all your options.  Breast augmentation can enhance your shape and increase your self esteem. Women who have realistic expectations and a thorough understanding of the procedure will be most satisfied with the results.
