Description
How do you know if you're allergic to condoms? You have several options if you learn you're allergic to latex. Watch this video to learn about polyurethane condoms, lambskin condoms and the female condom.
Transcript
If you experience post-coital itching, swelling and irritation on your genitals, use a process of elimination to figure it out. First, switch your latex condom for a polyurethane or polyisoprene condom. While latex has the MOST proven track record, BOTH of these protect against pregnancy AND sexually transmitted infections. NEITHER are known allergy triggers. Don’t go for lambskin condoms, though, since they DON’T prevent against STIs.[On-screen text: Natural membrane condoms only protect against pregnancy]Now…Condoms coated with spermicides use a chemical called Nonoxynol 9 for exra protection against pregnancy. This can kill sperm but CAN also cause vaginal or anal irritation. That is why spermicide condoms carry a warning that says they are not for rectal use and or more than once-a-day vaginal use. If you’ve eliminated latex condoms AND spermicide from the mix and you’re STILL feeling a burn down there, head to your doctor IMMEDIATELY. It’s something besides the condom that’s causing your distress and you need a consult.
