[x]   Transcript: Viagra is the brand name for sildenafil citrate, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, and was approved by the FDA in 1998. Sildenafil citrate is a prescription medication which is available as a generic drug and under the brand name Viagra. Sildenafil is a member of the phosphodiesterase inhibitor family. Heres how sildenafil works: When a man becomes erect, the arteries in his penis carry blood through the spongy tissue inside. When a health problem keeps genital blood from flowing properly, sildenafil increases blood flow to the penis, resulting in an erection. This increased blood flow to the penis makes sildenafil effective for treating erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil has a four-hour duration of action, meaning that sex play can last for some time. Viagra is available in twenty-five, fifty and one-hundred milligram tablets. Sildenafil should be taken as needed about thirty to sixty minutes before sexual activity. For maximum effectiveness, it should be taken on an empty stomach or with a low-fat meal. The most common side effects of sildenafil include headaches, nausea, and skin flush, but please ask your doctor for a complete list. Also, be sure to tell your physician immediately if you experience an erection that lasts longer than four hours, alterations in your vision, or any other significant changes. Sildenafil should not be taken in conjunction with medications that contain nitrates and should be used cautiously in people with low blood pressure. Ask your doctor for a full list of medications and conditions that should not be combined with sildenafil. Over fifty percent of men over the age of forty suffer from some sort of erectile dysfunction, and Viagra can be quite effective at easing symptoms. However, this drug should always be used under the direct care of a physician. Please ask for and review all of the information provided by your doctor before taking sildenafil. The information in this video is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise of your physician. Always consult your doctor before using this drug.
